Basements Insulation in Baltimore, MD

Basements are big culprits when it comes to air leaks. Basements have little or no protection from air leakage, allowing unconditioned air to infiltrate the home.

By insulating two key basement areas, a homeowner can almost immediately experience increased home comfort and will help reduce their energy bills. These areas are rim joists and box sills.

Rim Joist Insulation - Devere Insulation Home PerformanceRim Joist
A rim joist is the final joist that completes the end of the row of joists that support a floor or ceiling. This is the final joist that makes up the floor system of the first floor of the home and runs around the perimeter of the basement ceiling. These joints "rim" the basement and sit on top of the basement wall.

We recommend adding spray foam insulation to insulate and air seal rim joists. Rigid foam board can  also be added to insulate rim joists.

Box Sills
Basement Ceiling - Devere Insulation Home Performance
Basement Ceiling - Devere Insulation Home PerformanceA box sill is located around the edge of the basement ceiling where two joists run parallel and meet the wall of the basement. With no protection from the outside air temperatures, box sills can dramatically affect the temperature in a basement.
Often times a piece of fiberglass batt insulation is cut and placed in this space. Although this insulates the space, adding a fiberglass batt does not seal air leaks. We recommend adding spray foam insulation to insulate and air seal box sills.
